How to Deal with a Stalker

There’s nothing scarier than having a determined stalker after you and it seems that nothing is going to stop him. This used to be something that the police were ill equipped to deal with as there weren’t any laws in place. In fact, many women were killed due to the ineffectiveness of the laws when it came to dealing with stalkers. In most states, the hands of the police were tied when it came to stalkers. They were forced to wait until someone actually got hurt before they could take any action and, usually by then, it was too late.

Something that has helped stalker situations over all is the change in laws when it comes to dealing with them. Now there are ways for women that are being stalked to get help before it’s too late. Depending on where you live, your law enforcement can help. All you have to do is show the proof you have that you’re being stalked.

The first thing you need to understand about being stalked is that you did nothing to cause it. Sometimes women may date someone once, or even be in a relationship for a while that they have ended. In some cases, the women that stalkers fixate on don’t have to even know who they are. Stalkers have a fantasy that they build up in their minds. Many even have a full relationship going on in their heads and none of it is real.

If you start to receive unwanted attention such as phone calls and gifts, or visits at home from someone, be firm when telling him that you’re not interested. You’ll know soon enough if this man is a stalker or not. It won’t matter what you say to him. He’s not going to go away and may even increase his attention.

Tell your friends and family about him so that it’s known that you don’t want anything to do with this man. Then visit your police department and take out a restraining order against him. Also, on this visit, be sure to speak with someone about what he’s been doing. If you have any notes, gifts or recorded phone messages, take these into the police department, too.

If you’re comfortable around weapons such as firearms and know your way around them, it may be a good idea to get one to keep with you. Your stalker may have been showing some dangerous signs such as trying to break in your house or leaving you threatening messages. In that case, it’s perfectly understandable for you to have protection. Just be sure that you know what you’re doing or this weapon can easily be turned on you. It may also be helpful to take self-defense classes.

There are other things you can do like move, change your phone number to something unlisted and keep people around you all the time. But these can become inconvenient for you and won’t always work, anyway. Being the victim of a stalker can be one of the scariest things you can ever imagine. But if you get the right help, it doesn’t have to be the end of life as you know it.
